We conduct materials testing of various metallic materials such as steel, aluminium, and copper alloys. Testing of welding procedures is and has been an important activity area since the engineering industry started making deliveries to the Norwegian continental shelf.
When an accident has happened, it makes often financial and societal sense to try to understand the underlying cause of such accident. SINTEF Norlab can contribute to such understanding by a damage investigation of the damaged component. Independently of whether the root cause can be found inside or outside the material, such investigation can give valuable information for an analysis of the possible causes of the accident.
Fractography and microscopy
Fractography is the imaging of a fracture surface, often using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Based on such imaging, materials specialists can provide a description of material properties and can often also determine the cause of the fracture in the material. We have two electron microscopes, and our SEM experts have extensive materials expertise and experience with fracture investigations.
In cases where SEM fractography cannot be performed, or as a supplement to a SEM investigation, metallographic investigation of the material using a light-optical microscope offers a good alternative. In many cases, a metallographic investigation will provide information both about the material microstructure and whether the material contains any material defects.
The mechanical properties of the material are tested using various mechanical test methods. Mechanical testing can detect defects in the material or whether the mechanical properties deviate from any material certificates or references. Our mechanical laboratory is equipped for most common test methods and performs testing in accordance with standardised procedures or customised as needed.
We conduct a range of chemical analysis methods for the determination of alloy content. This includes several spectroscopic methods, wet chemical analysis, and SEM element analyses.
Our partner, MoTest NDT, conducts, among other things, penetrant, and magnetic powder testing to detect surface fractures in materials.
