Environmental building surveys
As a result of the Norwegian national action plan for construction and engineering waste, there has been a societal focus on the surveying of environmentally hazardous materials in buildings. SINTEF Norlab takes an active role in “Forum for miljøkartlegging og sanering” and has for many years conducted surveys of buildings planned to be demolished or renovated. Building materials are investigated with regard to asbestos, PCB, PAH, and other environmentally hazardous substances in line with the guidelines issued by the Norwegian Environment Agency.
Extensive experience
SINTEF Norlab has extensive experience in the surveying and analysis of environmentally hazardous materials in buildings and provides advisory services associated with surveying. We hold class 3 central approval for project planning of environmental remediation as issued by the Norwegian National Office of Building Technology and Administration. Our experience gives us unique expertise for providing advice on such matters, regarding sampling practicalities in accordance with TEK10 and chemical analyses.
Waste management plan
According to the Norwegian Waste Regulations, waste management plans and environmental remediation descriptions are required for renovation projects exceeding 100 m², demolition of buildings and parts of buildings exceeding 100 m² usable floor area, or renovation projects that generate more than 10 tonnes of construction and demolition waste.
Waste management plans are required for construction and extension of buildings comprising a usable floor area exceeding 300 m² or projects that generate more than 10 tonnes of waste. Environmentally hazardous materials in buildings and structures must be surveyed in order to prepare waste management plans and environmental remediation descriptions.
Surveying of contamination of land may be included in an environmental remediation description and SINTEF Norlab can assist in planning field work, laboratory investigations and soil classification. We can provide advice in connection with sample collection and carry out risk assessments in accordance with legislation and guidelines.
The requirements concerning waste management plans and environmental remediation are part the Norwegian Planning and Building Act, and the relevant local authority is responsible for verifying that waste management plans and environmental remediation descriptions are drawn up and followed.
